A RESIDENTS’ group which lobbied for heritage play equipment at their local park has been given something completely different. Friends of Abberley Park is upset the city council put in bright red, modern equipment, which it said is out of character with the area. “We were assured that the city council planners had chosen heritage and not garish colours,” the group wrote on its Facebook page. Member Patricia Wallace said the group has always been concerned about a “mish-mash” in the heritage park. The group wanted a more natural style of equipment that would fit in with the park’s 150year history, like the log slide already there. However, this type of equipment was deemed unsafe. The log slide, along with the rest of the current equipment, is being replaced as the city council requires all playgrounds to be upgraded for safety after 25 years. The group’s view is not shared by everyone living near the park in Abberley Cres, St Albans. •Turn to page 5

IT’S GREAT to see young people putting in the hard yards to achieve their sporting goals. On page 1 today Christchurch Girls’ High School’s Hannah Bates is doing just that as she continues on her promising swimming path. In July she’s off to the Bahamas for a Commonwealth meet, which could help springboard her to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Realistically though, she is looking further ahead to the 2024 Olympics when she will be in her mid-20s and at the top of her game. The hard yards are getting up just after 5am to train for a couple of hours, off to school and then when she gets home it’s back into the pool again. There’s a quiz night in July and a givealittle page to help Hannah achieve her goals. Support them. – Barry Clarke

PARK UPGRADES The city council has begun upgrading Papanui Domain; Tulett Park, Casebrook; and Carlton Mill Corner, Merivale. Drainage on these fields has been poor in the past, meaning they cannot be played on for a full sports season. The work involves laying new turf and installing better drainage and irrigation.
Gum trees get chop Eight blue gum trees near the Bishopdale Village Mall car park were given the chop yesterday. The trees were removed because of poor health and the risk they presented to the public. In November, the Bishopdale Business Association expressed concern after a tree limb fell and damaged a parked car. Plunket repairs will cost $15,000 more than planned REPAIRS TO the Redwood Plunket rooms may be more costly than initially thought. But the Papanui-Innes Community Board says the facility is needed desperately in the area. In the city

Bid to bottle Belfast water won’t benefit community
FendaltonWaimairiHarewood Community Board member Aaron Campbell writes about the controversial bottling of Belfast’s water We learned last week that 4.3 million litres per day of Christchurch’s aquifer water at the former Kaputone Wool Scour site in Belfast could be sent overseas in New Zealand’s second largest bottling operation. That’s more than Riccarton residents use per day; or another way, 600 Olympic swimming pools worth of water a year. The city council is hamstrung by legislation: The Government should tighten the Resource Management Act so a consent lapses when a business folds and it shouldn’t be transferable or sold. Worryingly, Phillip Burmester, who made $3 million on the wool scour sale, now plans to build another water bottling plant next door. In 2010, the Government

A changing climate and overallocation, mostly for irrigation to enable intensive farming, is affecting residents in our neighbouring districts at both ends of dairying, resulting in E. coli-laden, nitrogen rich soluble fertiliser leaching through our stony soils. Our city council is busy drilling deeper wells in the northwest for better water security, but still our aquifers can’t recharge quick enough, we must use our water more efficiently, both domestically and commercially.

A reader responds to an article about further delays to the Shirley Community Centre rebuild Meredyth Anderson – A great article, which I must say is good to know, but shocking too. It is outrageous that the city council is proposing to do this . . . They are all just talk and no action on things that matter. However, I see that when they want to pay for the mayor to have overseas travel or to buy a new thing, like the statue in the river, things get done quickly. It gives the impression that tourism and
overseas relationships are more important than the community. The city council is a fiasco in my opinion.

Red and cream were selected following those discussions,” he said. Friends of Abberley Park are still working towards keeping the heritage nature of the park in other ways. Mrs Wallace said members had voluntarily re-stained all the wooden seats. It is also lobbying for the restoration of the scent garden which was once a feature of Abberley Park. However, the group has not heard from the city council about it since January.

Hannah lives in Lincoln.

By Julia Evans PLACE OF many eels, ōWhatara, is the new Te Reo name for the Bishopdale Library. It’s previous name was Te Kete Wānanga o Papa Kōhatu, meaning place of many rocks. But as the old site on Farrington Ave is demolished, the city council was gifted ōWhatara for the new building, set to open in July. City council community central library manager Kate Ogden said the city council’s Ngāi Tahu partnership team asked whether it would be appropriate to continue to use the old library’s Maori name or whether the new facility should have a name more reflective of Ngāi Tahu/Ngāi Tūāhuriri history. “Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga was approached directly on our behalf and we were gifted the name ōWhatarau,” Ms Ogden said. The area was subjected to continual flooding of the old Waimairi River in pre-colonial times. “Apparently you found lots of eels there,” she said. The process is done as part of the city council’s partnership with Ngāi Tahu and the city council were not charged.

Giving people with disabilities a voice Mairehau’s Shane McInroe advocates for people with disabilities. He talks to Julia Evans about why he dedicates so much of his time to helping others What keeps you busy? Do you do a lot of work with the organisation People First New Zealand? Not just with People First, although I’m president of the Christchurch branch, which is a big commitment – I’m also involved with The Cube, which is a collaborative organisation about creating a community for young people. I’m involved with them and I’m on the board of Catapult Employment Services. They’re like Workbridge, trying to help get people with disabilities in work, but are only based in Canterbury. They’re small, which creates a family environment that I like. I give advice on what can and can’t work for the community based on my own experience. I’m also part of the IHC friendship programme, which buddies people up with someone
So you grew up on the West Coast? Yes, I moved to Christchurch when I was younger. I would say if I didn’t move to Christchurch, my life wouldn’t be where it is now. At the time, I thought it was crazy, why are these people talking about moving. Christchurch is a big smoke compared to Ikamatua. Population 600 on a good day. What was it like growing up there with a disability? Everyone treated everyone as they were. You had to. You’re pretty much right across the road or next-door from each other. If you don’t treat everyone very well, it’s going to be an unpleasant time. In Christchurch, I would say, yeah, it was okay. I mean, I wouldn’t say high school was great because no one really thinks it is great. Do you work with the city council? in the community How did you come to wear all these different hats? Was it something you just fell into? There was a presentation at the course I did at CPIT and I thought this sounds a bit like me. I joined People First NZ first and then got all these other roles after that. I also did a leadership course, just to understand what it was all about. From there, I got all these other roles in the community that take up my time. But that’s what volunteering is all about. That’s how the country keeps moving. You’ve got a lot on your plate? No, not really. It’s just the projects I came on board for are coming to an end and there should be some new blood in the group. So what challenges come along with all these roles? Some challenges would be all the jargon the people use and all the documents they love to write. They love typing. It’s the scholarly articles where my support person, Marg, comes in to be a great help. It’s like another language half the time and I’m there to bring the reality of disability to the table and share
my experience. But some of the time I can’t speak because I haven’t necessarily dealt with a particular area of disability. So all these opportunities sprung up once you started with People First NZ? Yes, that’s when I needed to go and get a diary. Was it something you always set out to achieve? It snowballed very quickly. In some ways it’s a good thing, but right now, it’s hard having all these roles. It’s good because I can speak using my life experience and my knowledge for people who can’t speak for themselves. There’s a huge amount of people that I know who are non-verbal, which is sad, but they can speak, just in a different way. I want to advocate for those people so their voices can be heard when often the system doesn’t allow it. And off the back of all this hard work you earned yourself a New Zealand youth with disability award, how was that? The youth awards was the quickest ceremony I’ve ever been to, it was great. None of this speech stuff. Well, there were a couple, but it was all very
efficient, it was great. I knew about a week before and I was sort of embarrassed, everyone was pretty proud. Do you show off about it? Oh, no. I’m not that sort of person. It’s not just for me. I feel like the award is for the community, even though it’s a youth award. It’s for all the work I’ve done in the community so it’s pretty much a community award. It’s just got my name on it, which doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it? So what’s next for you? I’m not sure, I just play it by ear and see what life throws at me. I would love to see more people with a disability understanding how local and national Government work. That’s why a lot don’t vote because they don’t understand. I would love to see civic education in schools. I’m working on it at the moment but so far it’s just a taster. Civic education is a bit useless at the moment, it doesn’t relate to people’s lives. It takes two seconds to vote every three years and it’s very sad. It’s not just people with disabilities who are affected, it’s a lot of young people.

Brigitte Smith and Georgina Scott, both 14, will be among the 60 riders competing in the event. Both girls rode in the event last year on 80cc motor-cycles, but this year they will be mounted on 125cc Italian Betas. They rode their new bikes in a club trial at Living Springs recently and showed they have the skills to be competitive with the male riders in their grade. They will be accompanied by their fathers, Glenn Smith and Derek Scott, who are both experienced trial riders. The Kaikoura trial will be runElmwood by the Pioneer Motorcycle Club and has been around since 1946. It is the longest running multi-day trial in Australasia. The trial will be held offroad on private land and, although two properties are unavailable this year due to the Kaikoura

Sands rides to victory in surf champs By Andrew King COLD AND windy conditions couldn’t stop a rampaging Sam Sands from taking top prize in the under-18 boys section of the Canterbury scholastic surf championships recently. The Christchurch Boys’ High student had a solid set in the final five minutes to win it from St Bede’s student Jordan Sparrow in testing conditions at New Brighton Beach. A southerly front moved through the area in the morning kicking up huge waves for the riders to feast on. Thomas Harcourt, also from CBHS, placed fourth in the section.
St Bede’s had a number of competitive riders with Caspar McCormick winning the longboard section thanks to some fancy footwork, James Millar was second in the under-14 boys section and Riley Gibson fourth in the under-16 boys section. Burnside High’s Kristy McDonald was third in the girls open section and was the top-ranked under-18 rider in the competition. The event acts as a trial for the Canterbury scholastic surf team, with a training squad to be announced in June in preparation for the national scholastic surf championships in Gisborne in October.

A one-sided 76-6 win over MidCanterbury Combined on Wednesday was table-topping CBHS’s fifth straight to start the campaign. Christ’s accounted for Aoraki Combined 41-0 on Saturday to remain in second spot on the UC Championship table. CBHS have not lost to Christ’s since 2000. They handed Christ’s their only round-robin loss last year 32-11. In other round 5 action, St Andrew’s College had a dominant win in their club day match against Lincoln Combined 58-18. The bonus point win was their third of the year and moves them into the top four. St Bede’s keen to build on first win of season By Andrew King ST BEDE’S College players will have a spring in their step when they run out against northern rivals Papanui after getting their first win in the Connetics first XI football competition last week. St Bede’s had an impressive 4-1 victory over Cashmere on Wednesday night, knocking them off the top spot into third. Now the they will look to back that up when they face Papanui at 4pm. All games will be played at the
Christchurch Football Centre. The last time the two sides met, St Bede’s took three points winning 3-2. However, Papanui will want to add to their one win of the season after going down to Burnside 7-4 on Wednesday. Burnside now turn their attention to 12th placed Rangiora, which had a night to forget in round 4, beaten 10-0 by top of the table side Lincoln. Their previous meeting saw Burnside come out on top 4-1.

Selwyn House problem solvers off to US competition FOUR YEAR 8 pupils from Selwyn House will travel to the United States to compete in the future problem solving international competition. The girls are the national champions of future problem solving junior division after winning in Auckland late last year. Held at University of Wisconsin’s La Crosse campus, Future Problem is an international education programme that sets to
develop creative, critical and caring thinking skills. Pupils will wrestle with some of the challenging issues facing modern society and work to create positive solutions. Topics include space junk, recovery from disaster and alternative sources of energy. The girls have been training hard and researching biosecurity, the topic designated for the finals in Wisconsin. “I knew almost nothing
about biosecurity before we started our research but I’m really enjoying learning in depth about it,” said team member Emily Cox. Another team member Emma Cawood interviewed biosecurity experts in Dunedin and Invercargill during her school holidays because she has become so interested in this topic. The girls leave for the US on June 4 and are currently busy fundraising to support their travel.
Festival finals for Rangi musician RANGI RURU Girls’ School student Valerie Xiang is taking her drumming composition to Wellington for the Sheliah Winn Shakespeare Festival national finals. Valerie composed incidental music for the 15min excerpt from King Lear that the school’s senior students performed in the region. Director of Music at Rangi Ruru, Janet Kingsbury said Valerie is an outstanding academic and music scholar who has many strings to her bow. In addition to being a composer, Valerie is a percussionist in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, in a senior chamber music group at Rangi Ruru, a singer and piano accompanist for the senior choral group Resolutions, and plays percussion in the Rangi Sinfonia. Mrs Kingsbury said Valerie is the St Andrew’s at Rangi Ruru Organ Scholar for 2017. She played the organ as part of a concert to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the church moving to the school grounds from Hospital Corner. Valerie will travel to Wellington over Queen’s Birthday Weekend for the competition awards event.

BROCCOLI, WALNUT AND COTTAGE CHEESE PIES Ingredients 12 slices Bread 1/2 cup (8 Tbsp) Butter, melted, or olive oil, for brushing 2 Eggs 6 Tbsp Cottage cheese 3 Tbsp Walnuts, chopped ½ cup Cheddar cheese, grated 1 cup Broccoli, in small florets, steamed ½ tsp Salt Directions Make bread cases by brushing one side of each slice of bread with some melted butter or oil and pressing. Buttered side down, put in to muffin pans (if using thick bread flatten the bread out a little with your hand or a rolling pin first). Bake at 170 deg C for 20 minutes or until brown and very crisp. Take them out straight away and leave to cool on a cake rake to avoid going soggy. You can keep the bread cases in an airtight container for a few days if you are not making the pies straight away. Beat the eggs and mix through
the walnuts, cheddar, steamed broccoli, salt and a good grind of pepper. Fold in the cottage cheese. You want to keep blobs of cottage cheese through the mix. Place the bread cases back in to the muffin pans and spoon in the mixture. Bake in a 180 deg C oven for 15 minutes or until set through.

Put all the cream, caster sugar and the very finely grated zest and juice of the lemon in a mixing bowl and whisk until mixed. Taste and add more lemon juice or sugar if needed. Whisk until the cream thickens but has not started to stiffen. Be careful not to over-whip. Pour into 4 small dishes, cover with plastic wrap and freeze.

Cut some small waxy potatoes into discs (leave the skin on), brush them with oil and space them out on an oven tray. Roast them until they are just soft and nicely golden coloured. Drain the swedes (keep the poaching liquid) and puree them with the roasted garlic. Add enough of the poaching liquid to achieve a firm but smooth puree. Mound up a generous teaspoon of the mash on to each disc, season well with salt and pepper and top with parsley.
